The natural potentials for the development of tourism in the Smederevo municipality are reflected in the gentle landscape of the Danube riverbank and the hilly terrain covered in vineyards and orchards, the moderate continental climate, the wealth of surface waters of the Danube, Great Morava, Jezava, Ralja, and Konjska („Horse“) River and artificial lakes, the protected „Šalinački lug” ancient oak forest and an abundance of small and large game, and various fishes.
The first body of water destined for us was the Panonian Sea, our connection to the pre-Slavic demons, protectors and avengers, because we built our city on the bottom of the Panonian Sea. In the forgotten lagoons of Dreša’s branch of the river, washed out by the Danube ever since those times, the mischievous demon “KEMZA” remains, who upsets the boats of drunken fishermen to this day. The Danube is the second body of water we are destined to be tied to. It was the waterway by which we sent our culture and gentry to the world in medieval times, and it was how the world came to us. The Smederevo freshwater mussel, the golden carp and 120-kg-sturgeons live only in Dreša’s branch. Its waters reflect the battlements of the city of Đurđ Smederevac, the walls of the last Serbian medieval capital. Some ten kilometers from Smederevo the largest Serbian river, the Great Morava, runs into the Danube. The Great Morava runs through the Smederevo municipality for a length of 27 km. Živa voda (Live Water) is our third destined water. The Artesian well that quenched the thirst of Smederevo. It is lukewarm and smells of boiled eggs, and whoever tastes it finds it nauseous. Whoever drinks it a second time, remains in Smederevo and becomes one of its own! Girls wash their hair with the water, to keep it shining. There are thermal waters at Jugovo, located at a depth of 746m to 892m, with a water temperature of 66ºC and high mineral and salt content, giving it the flavor of sea water. These thermal waters contribute to our potential for developing spa tourism on the renowned Smederevo excursion spot – Jugovo, which is located 5km from the center of the city. There are many fishing spots very close to Smederevo where sport fishing takes place. There are plenty of opportunities to catch high quality, large fishes, especially “white” fish. Our waters offer a lot of joy and pleasure to sport fishermen, as well as good recreation in nature that is beautiful and attractive around Smederevo. The Danube is our main and most famous fishing area, and it stretches from Orešac (9km from Smederevo) to the confluence of the Great Morava (12km downstream). There are some good spots on the right bank of the Danube for catching larger specimens: at the Jugovo picnic spot, on the stone embankment upstream from the Old Ironworks, and from where the US Steel canal runs into the Danube to the confluence of the Great Morava (a famous spot for fishing walleye). All other spots are good for catching “white fish”, especially walleye, catfish and carp. Capital specimens of all types (excepting pikes) have been caught in the Danube. Fishing takes place on the Danube from mid-May until late autumn. The Velika (“Great”) Morava is the other large river near Smederevo, stretching, in its lower parts, from Veliko Orašje to its confluence with the Danube 12km downstream from Smederevo. The good fishing spots are near Trnovče, Lipe and Šalinac, especially around the new bridge on the Požarevac road. All types of fish are caught, most often barbell (more than in the Danube), catfish, walleye and to some extent, carp. The large specimens of catfish from the Morava are renowned.
There are several lakes near Smederevo that were created by machines extracting gravel. On the Smederevo – Smederevska Palanka road, near Dobri Do (23 km from Smederevo) there is an artificial lake, the so-called Azanjsko jezero. There are a lot of carps, Crucian carp and tench. Special fishing permits are required from the Agricultural association of Azanja. For additional information, please refer the Municipal organization of sport fishermen.
The special natural reserve “ŠALINAČKI LUG”, in the Smederevo municipality, covers an area of 1912ha and is a unique oak forest consisting of 311 trees over 300 years old. Owing to their size, age, general appearance and condition, the trees are a botanical monument of nature, of cultural, educational and scientific value. The entire area is good for the development of environmental tourism. KARAĐORĐE’S MULBERRY – a botanical monument of nature, over 300 years old, with two separate tree crowns. The northern branch is dry, 5m long and 84cm in diameter. The healthy crown is 10m in diameter and 8m high. The horizontal branches are very strong, 83cm in diameter, and for that reason the tree was unstable, and now has added supports. Karađorđe’s mulberry is of historical importance and a pleasant resting spot as well. The HUNTING GROUNDS of the Smederevo municipality offer mostly small game (rabbit, fox, otter), and some large game, such as deer. The most common fowl are pheasant, quail and wild duck. |
